Coverage And Results
Your outside signal strength — especially where your outdoor antenna is placed — plays a big role in how much indoor coverage you’ll get. This table gives a rough guide based on real-world testing. Results may vary.
Outside Signal | Signal Strength (dB) | Est. Indoor Coverage |
---|---|---|
5 Bars | -40 to -70 dB | Up to 500 m² |
4–5 Bars | -70 to -80 dB | Up to 400 m² |
3–4 Bars | -85 to -95 dB | Up to 300 m² |
2–3 Bars | -95 to -105 dB | Up to 200 m² |
1–2 Bars | -105 to -115 dB | Up to 120 m² |
No Signal | ~ -120 dB | Likely no signal to boost |

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between the A500 and A1000?
The WilsonPro A500 is a great fit for homes in urban or suburban areas where there’s fair outdoor signal—it’s designed to cover 1–2 rooms effectively. It’s perfect for boosting signal in spaces like home offices, bedrooms, or lounges.
The WilsonPro A1000 is a more powerful system designed for homes with poor outdoor signal and/or those located farther from cell towers. It can cover up to 4 rooms and is better suited for areas where signal is weak or inconsistent.
Here’s where the power difference comes in:
A500 offers up to 70 dB of gain, while the A1000 offers up to 74 dB.
4 dB increase represents nearly 2.5 times more signal amplification power, which can make a substantial difference in low-signal environments.
In addition to gain, there’s also a difference in amplifier output power:
A500 has lower uplink and downlink power, meaning it can’t reach as far to connect with distant towers or push strong signal through larger or more signal-blocking structures.
A1000 offers higher uplink/downlink output, enabling it to communicate more effectively with distant cell towers and push stronger signal indoors over a wider area.
So, if you’re in an area with weaker outdoor signal, or your home is constructed with materials that block signal, the A1000 is the more capable and future-proof option.
How big of an area does it cover?
The A500 can boost signal in up to 1–2 rooms or around 75–500 m², depending on your home layout and the strength of your outdoor signal. It’s ideal for areas like home offices, bedrooms, lounges, or studies where indoor signal is typically poor.
Can I install it myself?
Yes – the A500 comes with a complete DIY installation kit, including a 15-metre and a 10-metre coaxial cable to connect your outdoor and indoor antennas to the amplifier. It’s designed for straightforward setup with step-by-step instructions.
However, for more complex installations or if you need a custom solution, we highly recommend using our professional installation team to ensure optimal performance and compliance with best practices.
Which networks does it support?
The A500 works with all South African mobile networks, including Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, and Telkom. It supports voice and data on 2G, 3G, 4G/LTE, and most 5G NSA frequencies.
What’s the warranty and return policy?
The A500 comes with a 2-year warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Will this boost 4G or just calls?
Yes – the A500 boosts both voice and data signals, including 3G, 4G, and LTE, depending on what your mobile network provides in your area.
However, it’s important to note that the booster does not increase your internet speed beyond what your mobile network or ISP already offers. What it does do is provide your phone or LTE device with a stronger, more stable signal, which leads to more consistent data speeds, fewer dropped calls, and better overall performance – especially indoors or in areas with weak coverage.
Do I need surge protection for my A500 booster?
Yes. Like any electronic device, the A500 is vulnerable to power surges and lightning strikes, which can cause permanent damage to the system. Surge protection is essential to keep your booster safe and functioning reliably.
To protect your investment, we strongly recommend plugging your booster into a surge protector plug and installing the lightning surge protector (included with your kit), making sure it is properly grounded.
Is it safe to use in my home or office?
Yes – the A500 is completely safe to use in homes, offices, and vehicles. It meets all local and international safety and emissions standards, including those set by ICASA.
In fact, using a signal booster can actually reduce your exposure to radiation. When your phone struggles to find signal, it emits higher levels of radiation to stay connected. With a booster like the A1000 improving your signal, your phone can operate more efficiently at lower power levels.
To put it in perspective: holding a cell phone next to your head emits more radiation than having a signal booster quietly installed in a corner of your home or car.
