Restoring Critical Mobile Connectivity for a Leading Healthcare Facility

Ecomed Medical (Pty) Ltd is a leading medical equipment and healthcare solutions provider supplying hospitals and clinical facilities across South Africa. Their operations rely heavily on real-time communication — from coordinating oxygen deliveries to running call centre support and maintaining efficient administrative workflows.

The Problem

Despite being located in a business district in Monument, Krugersdorp, the building suffered from severely weak indoor mobile reception, especially for Vodacom users on the lower level where most staff are stationed. Unreliable signal impacted call centre performance, internal team communication, IT operations, HR accessibility, and customer service responsiveness.

Ecomed contacted Bolton Technical to implement a professional, long-term mobile connectivity solution across two phases:

  1. Lower Level Departments
  2. Directors’ Offices

The building’s lower level is constructed with dense concrete, metal-supported ceilings, and multiple internal partitions — all of which degraded cellular signal significantly.

During the first site assessment, our signal experts recorded the following pre-installation readings:

  • Vodacom: between –117 dB and –121 dB (unusable signal)
  • MTN: between –93 dB and –106 dB (very poor to non-existent)

Critical business areas were affected:

  • Marketing
  • Oxygen Department
  • HR & IT
  • Reception
  • Oxygen Call Centre

The impact of poor reception included:

  • Inability to receive or place calls reliably
  • Extremely slow or failed mobile data access
  • Call centre disruptions during high-demand periods
  • Unpredictable communication between internal teams
  • Total dependency on WiFi calling, which failed during load-shedding
  • Slower response times to medical clients and healthcare partners

It became clear that Ecomed required a multi-network, high-performance, ICASA-approved signal solution.

Ecomed Circuit design

Solution

Our Signal Experts designed a two-phase system addressing both the lower level and, later on, the directors’ offices.

Phase 1: Lower Level Departments

Equipment Installed:

  • 2 × LPDA Arrow High-gain donor antenna
  • 1 × WilsonPro A1000 Enterprise-grade cellular amplifier
  • 6 × 4G Ceiling Dome Antennas for widespread indoor coverage

The LPDA Arrow was mounted externally to capture clean signal from both MTN and Vodacom towers. The WilsonPro A1000 then boosted and redistributed this improved signal through six ceiling antennas strategically placed throughout the lower-level offices.

Post-Installation Improvements

Marketing Department

  • MTN improved from –106 dB to –44 dB
  • Vodacom improved from –119 dB to –47 dB

Oxygen Department

  • MTN improved from –102 dB to –51 dB
  • Vodacom improved from –99 dB to –46 dB

HR & IT Department

  • MTN improved from –101 dB to –48 dB
  • Vodacom improved from approximately –109 dB to –46 dB

Reception Area

  • MTN improved from –93 dB to –51 dB
  • Vodacom improved from –121 dB to –54 dB

Oxygen Call Centre

  • MTN improved from –96 dB to –47 dB
  • Vodacom improved from –117 dB to –53 dB

These improvements represent increases of 60–70 dB, transforming all departments from “dead zone” conditions to fully usable, stable mobile connectivity.

Phase 2: Directors’ Offices

Following the success of the lower-level installation, Ecomed requested improved signal coverage for the directors’ floor.

Equipment Installed:

  • 1 × WilsonPro A500 Amplifier
  • 2 × Indoor Wall-Mount Panel Antennas
  • Sourced from an existing donor setup to integrate seamlessly

The A500 solution provided targeted, high-gain coverage to office spaces where leadership required dependable mobile communication throughout the workday.

The Result

Across both phases, Ecomed experienced a complete transformation of in-building mobile coverage, including:

  • Strong, stable Vodacom and MTN coverage across all lower-level departments
  • Successful support for call centre operations with no further dropped-call incidents
  • Improved internal communication between HR, IT, Oxygen, and Marketing units
  • Directors’ offices now enjoy reliable multi-network signal
  • Reduced reliance on WiFi calling, especially during load-shedding
  • Increased staff productivity and improved response times to healthcare clients
  • Future-proof infrastructure supporting additional antennas or expansion if required
